Two years ago we wondered if we could make money from a regular Draft booster box. The results were surprisingly good, as we were lucky enough to hit a chase foil card.

Fast forward to today. We have Double Masters 2022, stacked with reprints of high-value cards but also comes with a hefty price. The Collector booster packs are the only place to find the new “textured” foil cards, and this time we
Is it worth it to buy the Collector Packs for Double Masters 2022? When we used a pack opening simulator MTGen, and pre-order prices (based on 26 June proces) from reputed online website Star City Games, the average value of a Collector pack is at least 50% over the cost price.
Numbers change once the product is out and prices adjust according to how easy/difficult it is to obtain a certain card. So keep in mind that prices could eventually stabilise to 50% of what is shown here. Preorder prices tend to be on the inflated side.
*Update: we’ve added release-day prices for 8 July 2022, also from Star City Games.
Contents of a Double Masters 2022 Collector Pack:
We need to point out that Double Masters 2022 is a high-tier, specialty product that is not intended for newer players. The Collector packs have a high-risk, high-reward model because it only contain 4 packs, costs $250-$300, and are really meant for keeping in your binder or to sell at a future date.

If we ignore the Uncommon and Common cards since their supply will be highest and carry the lowest value, then a collector booster pack guarantees 4 cards in a mix of Rare or Mythic Rare categories. Simply put, you could get 4 Rares, 4 Mythic Rares or anywhere in between.
Below, you can see the simulated results of 8 Collector pack openings. For the purpose of simplicity, we will calculate average value of the Collector pack by taking into account just these 4 Rare/Mythic Rares.

Breakdown of Profit/Loss for Double Masters Collector Packs on Preorder
No. of packs that produced profit: 5
Average profit over 6 packs: approx. $109
No. of packs the produced a loss: 3
Average loss over 2 packs: $10.50
There are a higher number of packs (6) that show a profit, and the average gain is also much, much higher ($109) than the average loss ($10.50). There are some key points to bear in mind though:
- These are based on preorder prices, which tend to be inflated.
- You are able to sell all 4 Rare/Mythic cards for the listed price or higher. Selling takes time, and prices can change. After considering any shipping fees, you may also not be earning as much.
- Simulated openings do not truly reflect the odds of pulling specific cards. When cards are printed, there may be weighting involved and certain cards are less common than others.
Breakdown of Profit/Loss for Double Masters Collector Packs on Release Day
No. of packs that produced profit: 5
Average profit over 5 packs: approx. $185
No. of packs the produced a loss: 3
Average loss over 3 packs: $17.33
End Step
Our conclusion is simple: follow similar investment rules when deciding whether to buy Double Masters Collector packs (or from any other set). Be prepared to come away with a heavy loss, but also be aware of expected returns that can make you better off.
Release day prices have also shown to be generally lower than preorder prices, and 1 of the 8 packs went from profit to loss during this transition. The lottery “textured-foil” cards are holding value (even appreciating), but expect everything else to slowly fall.

If you can hit 1 of the 9 best cards in Double Masters 2022, you’ll come up on top. Miss those and you could be breaking even (if lucky) or walk away with not much intrinsic value. The choice is yours, let us know how you did if you do get some Collector packs!
