Over 30 MTG Players Gather to Support Mental Wellbeing Among Singapore’s Youth

Many may be travelling or enjoying some long-awaited time with their families this holidays season, but that didn’t stop a bunch of Magic players come together to help the local mental wellness scene in Singapore.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Board Games Club and Limitless collaborated for a one-day event – Wizards for a Cause – designed to help to the non-profit organisation raise funds for their community. Limitless runs community events to highlight the challenges of mental illness, poverty, bullying and social equality, especially among the younger generation.

The full-day event may not have been able to tap onto the weekend crowd (and sandwiched between Christmas and New Year’s) Day, but a healthy 30+ people supported the initiative to raise awareness (and money) to help improve mental wellbeing among the youth here. Local MTG artist Julian Kok also came by to say hi to players and donated a few artist proofs and sketch cards for the event’s auction segment.

The full entry price of $10 went to Limitless, and in return players got a bunch of free giveaways including 30th anniversary promo cards, Kaldheim and Jumpstart booster packs. Those who stayed till dinner even got to bid on even more MTG swag, from donated playmats, card sleeves, and sealed Kaldheim Collector Booster boxes. All prizes were generously donated by local games store Grey Ogre Games.

The day’s event was mostly focused on the Planechase variant of Commander, with a special twist. Twelve new Planes were customised just for this event, bringing a brand new dimension that players found to be a nice break away from the old. Every 15 minutes, the Planes were rotated to

Wizards for a Cause is further proof that Commander is the preferred format among casual players, as the Modern tournament failed to gather enough players. While the event was also set up to welcome new players, most who attended already had some experience with Magic.

After playing from Tempest to Urza's Saga block, Ted took a 20 year break from the game before returning to the classic Plane of Dominaria in 2018. His favourite formats are Commander, Draft, and, grudgingly, Standard.
